Dexter Gordon Quartet - As Time Goes By (from vinyl LP Manhattan Simphonie)

Dexter Gordon Quartet - As Time Goes By (from vinyl LP Manhattan Simphonie)

From the vinyl LP Manhattan Simphonie Gordon's sound was commonly characterized as being "large" and spacious and he had a tendency to play behind the beat. He was known for inserting musical quotes into his solos, with sources as diverse as "Happy Birthday" and well known melodies from the operas of Wagner. This is not unusual in jazz improvisation, but Gordon did it frequently enough to make it a hallmark of his style. One of his major influences was Lester Young. Gordon, in turn, was an early influence on John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Rollins and Coltrane then influenced Gordon's playing as he explored hard bop and modal playing during the 1960s. I do not own the copyright to the music, the recording and the photos. This video is posted for educational use under Section 17 U.S. Code § 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use. All posts are rendered in old school using restored vinyl LPs. This channel does not use recordings from CDs. As much as possible, I attempted to remove most of the pops and crackles from the original vinyl album. Some remastering was applied to make the performance cut through within the confines of the loudness wars. Hope you enjoy. INXDS. #jazzsax #bop #vinylrecord

Teddy Buckner - Martinique (vinyl record)

From the vinyl LP Teddy Buckner and his Dixieland Band.

Teddy Buckner (July 16, 1909 in Sherman, Texas – September 22, 1994 in Los Angeles, California) was an American jazz trumpeter associated with Dixieland music. Early in his career Buckner played with Sonny Clay. He worked with Buck Clayton in Shanghai in 1934, and later worked with Benny Carter among others. From 1949 to 1954, he worked in Kid Ory's band, which was perhaps the closest to the style he preferred. In the late 1950s his work with Sidney Bechet in France made him popular there but, before going to France, he recorded the soundtrack of the movie King Creole with Elvis Presley in 1958. From 1965 to 1981 he performed with his traditional Dixieland jazz band at Disneyland's New Orleans Square. In addition to this he worked with blues musician T-Bone Walker and did some acting. This included an uncredited role in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? He played cornet in a few of his film roles. I do not own the copyright to the music, the recording and the photos. Julian Cannonball Adderly - STARS FELL ON ALABAMA (vinyl record)

Julian Cannonball Adderly - STARS FELL ON ALABAMA

With guests JOHN COLTRANE, WYNTON KELLY and PAUL CHAMBERS Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley (September 15, 1928 – August 8, 1975) was an American jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. His nickname “Cannonball” was supposedly derived from the word “cannibal,” which his friends called him because of his massive appetite. Adderley is perhaps best remembered for the 1966 soul jazz single "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”, which was written for him by his keyboardist Joe Zawinul and became a major crossover hit on the pop charts. A cover version by the Buckinghams also reached #5 on the charts. Adderley worked with Miles Davis, first as a member of the Davis sextet, appearing on the seminal records Milestones (1958) and Kind of Blue (1959), and then on his own 1958 album Somethin' Else. He was the elder brother of jazz trumpeter Nat Adderley, who was a longtime member of his band. I do not own the copyright to the music, the recording and the photos.
