Red Rodney - Daddy O (vinyl record)

From the vinyl LP "MODERN MUSIC FROM CHICAGO" featuring RED RODNEY, trumpet; VICTOR SPROLES, bass; NORMAN SIMMONS, piano; IRA SULLIVAN, tenor sax and trumpet; ROY HAYNES, drums.

This record was recorded at the Universal Studios Chicago in the latter part of June 1955. Red Rodney was working at the Bee-Hive, one of Chicago's top jazz nite spots. Using the same side-men on the recording dates as he was at the club, the results were behooving to all concerned Red Rodney was born in Philadelphia 29 years ago and hit the big time when only 16 with one of the famous Benny Goodman editions. Experience followed in the big and small combos of innumerable top band leaders, most notably Krupa, Elliot Lawrence, Ventura, Herman, and of course, CHARLIE PARKER! Quite naturally, it was during this almost two-year association with Bird (shared also by our specially imported drummer for this date, Roy Haynes), that all of Red's previous experience was further developed and enhanced. It was here that he musically matured. We can first remember Roy Haynes as the booting drummer with one of those fantastically swinging combos Lester Young always has. And those wonderful patterns he laid down on those famous Bud Powell sides are still amazing. Roy's versatility and swinging taste are goals for which other drummers strive, yet which come off so easy, as witness his solo on "Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie," a song made famous by his ex-boss, Lester "Prez"Young. (Liner Notes, Joe Segal)

Robert Roland Chudnick (September 27, 1927 – May 27, 1994), known professionally as Red Rodney, was an American jazz trumpeter.

He accepted an invitation from Charlie Parker to join his quintet and was a member of the band from 1949–1951. Being the only white member of the group, when playing in the southern United States he was billed as "Albino Red" as a ruse to avoid prejudice against mixed race musical combos. During this time he recorded extensively.

Dexter Gordon - SCRAPPLE FROM THE APPLE (vinyl record)

Dexter Gordon - SCRAPPLE FROM THE APPLE (vinyl record)

From the vinyl LP "LIVE AT THE AMSTERDAM PARADISO VOL II" featuring:

Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone)
Cees Slinger (piano)
Jacques Schols (bass)
Han Bennink (drums)
Paradiso, Amsterdam, February 5, 1969

Gordon's sound was commonly characterized as being "large" and spacious and he had a tendency to play behind the beat. He was known for inserting musical quotes into his solos, with sources as diverse as "Happy Birthday" and well known melodies from the operas of Wagner. This is not unusual in jazz improvisation, but Gordon did it frequently enough to make it a hallmark of his style. One of his major influences was Lester Young. Gordon, in turn, was an early influence on John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Rollins and Coltrane then influenced Gordon's playing as he explored hard bop and modal playing during the 1960s.

Stan Getz - AUTUMN LEAVES Take Two (vinyl record)

From the compilation vinyl LP "Unearthed Masters vol. 2" featuring STAN GETZ
WITH HORACE SILVER, TOMMY POTTER, AL HAIG AND ROY HAYNES

Stanley Getz (February 2, 1927 – June 6, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist. Playing primarily the tenor saxophone, Getz was known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone, with his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band, Getz is described by critic Scott Yanow as "one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists". Getz performed in bebop and cool jazz groups. Influenced by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, he popularized bossa nova in the United States with the hit single "The Girl from Ipanema" (1964).

Art Blakey - UGH! (vinyl record)

From the vinyl LP Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers New York 1957

Collective Personnel:
BILL HARDMAN, trumpet
JACKIE Mc LEAN, alto sax
SAM DOCKERY, piano
SPANKY DEBREST, bass
ART BLAKEY, drums
New-York, March, 8-9,1957

Art Blakey, also called Abdullah Ibn Buhaina, (born October 11, 1919, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.—died October 16, 1990, New York, New York), American drummer and bandleader noted for his extraordinary drum solos, which helped define the offshoot of bebop known as “hard bop” and gave the drums a significant solo status. His style was characterized by thunderous press rolls, cross beats, and drum rolls that began as quiet tremblings and grew into frenzied explosions.

Blakey taught himself to play the piano while he was a teenager and performed on piano (and later drums) in jazz clubs in the evenings while working in the steel mills by day. Beginning in 1939, as a drummer, he performed with several bands, most notably (1944–47) with that of Billy Eckstine. Among the artists he met and performed with during that period were Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, and Billie Holiday.

Art Pepper - Po Po / Di Di (vinyl record)

From the vinyl LP Pacific Jazz, featuring THE ART PEPPER NINE Art Pepper/ Alto Sax Stu Williamson/Valve Trombone Don Fagerquist/Trumpet Bill Holman/Tenor Sax Bud Shank/Baritone Sax Red Callendar/Tuba Russ Freeman/ Piano Monte Budwig/Bass Shelly Manne/Drums Composed, Arranged and Conducted by Shorty Rogers

Art Pepper, born in Gardena, California on September 1, 1925 and raised in nearby San Pedro, began playing clarinet at age 9 and, by 15, was performing in Lee Young's band at the Club Alabam on Central Avenue, the home of jazz in prewar Los Angeles. He joined Stan Kenton's band, touring the U.S. and gaining fame, but was drafted in 1943 serving as an MP in London and performing with some British jazz bands. He returned to the States and to Kenton, touring and recording. In 1952 he placed second only to Charlie Parker in the Down Beat jazz poll. Probably his most famous recording from that period is his stunning performance of 'Art Pepper,' written by Shorty Rogers (as part of a series of charts Kenton had commissioned to feature members of his band).

Art left Stan Kenton in 1951 to form his own group, occasionally recording for Rogers and others. He signed with Contemporary Records in 1957.

From the beginning Art's playing combined a tender delicacy of tone with a purity of narrative line—a gift for storytelling that was made irresistible by an inherent, dancing, shouting, moaning inability to ever stop swinging.
